Studium and Punctum

For me this photo is studium because although it's interesting, it doesn't grab you and pull you in.

This expresses punctum for me because the girls eyes just grab you and make you want to explore the photo, going from her eyes to her hands covering her mouth.

  2. I can see exactly what you mean about the second picture. It reminds me a lot of the picture that was on the cover of National Geographic of the girl from Afghanistan with the green eyes (I think that was the 1980s?). I think it has that really piercing quality to it. ~Jessica

  3. I agree that the second picture is very intriguing but I'm not sure that Barthes would say that was punctum. It seems like the photographer knew that her eyes would be captivating and therefore took the picture to highlight her eyes. I think Barthes would say that this was intentional punctum.

  4. I actually love them both! I think they are both punctum for me. I say this because I like the light in the ferris wheel photo and I personally like photos of ferris wheels. I am drawn to the photo with the girl as well because of her eyes. Both of the photos I think are photographed simply and have one straight forward message..whatever that is, I do not know.
